Leading with Data: Building a Culture of Inquiry

Explore strategies for fostering a school-wide culture where data is used to inform decisions and drive continuous improvement.

Hosts: Tim Evans/Jamie Robb

Discussion Questions:

  1. How can school leaders create a culture where data is used not just to measure performance, but to uncover and address inequities in learner experience and outcomes?
  2. What strategies can leaders use to build staff capacity and confidence in using data as a tool for inquiry, reflection, and continuous improvement?
  3. How do we ensure that data use in our school builds trust, supports inclusive decision-making, and drives meaningful change rather than compliance or surveillance?

Demystifying Data: Building Staff Confidence & Competence

Address common barriers to understanding data and explore ways to increase staff confidence in interpreting and using student data effectively.

Host: Emma Burns

Discussion Questions:

  1. What common fears or uncertainties prevent staff from confidently using student data, and what are the first practical steps a school can take to help overcome these?
  2. How can regular, collaborative discussions about student data be integrated into staff routines to build their skills and willingness to use this information for teaching adjustments?

Data-Informed Instruction: Tailoring Learning to Student Needs

Focus on practical techniques for using data to adapt teaching methods and materials to better support diverse student learning needs.

Host: John Kennett

Discussion Questions:

  2. When data reveals diverse student needs (e.g., gaps, strengths), how do you balance whole-class adjustments with targeted interventions? How might this practically be applied to lead to improved outcomes?
  3. How can schools design simple, sustainable routines (e.g., weekly exit tickets, student conferencing) to collect and interpret data without overwhelming teachers or sacrificing instructional time?

Using Data to Foster Student Agency
