Personalized Professional Growth through PeerSphere Coaching

By LeeAnne Lavender, PeerSphere Storyteller

Millie Yip, an assistant librarian at the Chinese International School (CIS) in Hong Kong, shares her enriching experience with the PeerSphere peer coaching program, highlighting the immense benefits it has added to her professional development.

Introduced to the PeerSphere platform by her supervisor at CIS, Millie joined a professional learning community (PLC) for librarians and then applied to participate in the coaching program. She has found herself immersed in a supportive network where experiences and insights are freely exchanged, and she says both the PLC and coaching sessions have impacted her professional work in deep ways.

After a few false starts with other professionals in the coaching program, Millie was paired with Erin, the host of the PeerSphere librarians PLC who also resides in Hong Kong. In Erin, Millie found a dedicated mentor who has offered personalized guidance tailored to her role and goals. Since they live in the same place, Millie and Erin have the option to meet online or in person, which adds a rich component to their relationship.

“We meet every month for an hour, and it’s been so good,” says Millie. “ I will often share questions or scenarios and Erin will give me advice on how to respond or how to solve those issues. We share a lot of information with each other and even connect each other to events and share links. We’re very compatible.”

Millie’s partnership with Erin exemplifies the essence of one-on-one peer coaching, where specific needs and challenges receive focused attention. Erin’s insights and feedback not only address immediate concerns but also empower Millie to tackle long-term projects and skill development. From technical library operations to strategic planning for library renovations, the mentorship covered a wide spectrum of topics crucial to Millie’s growth in her role.

The synergy between Millie and Erin has extended beyond professional matters, encompassing shared interests and mutual support. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they have found common ground in their passion for library science and dedication to enhancing student experiences. Their collaboration has extended to exploring resources, exchanging ideas, and even navigating the intricacies of social media engagement with students.

Reflecting on her experience, Millie underscores the pivotal role of effective coaching in professional growth. She acknowledges PeerSphere co-founder and facilitator, Michael Iannini, for his prompt support in ensuring she would find a compatible coach. Moreover, Millie shares insights gleaned from Erin and peers in her PLC sessions with colleagues, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and continuous learning with her team.

Millie has enjoyed her coaching experience so much this year that she looks forward to options in 2024/25, as well. In adding peer coaching to its offerings, PeerSphere is designing deeply impactful professional learning for all of its members.
